Playing In The Pocket With Little Feat Drummer Richie Hayward

One of the best pocket drummers was Richie Hayward.  Unfortunately, he passed away in 2010, but is remembered by fellow drummers, musicians and fans all over the world as being a gifted drummer.  Hayward flew under the radar when it comes to popular music, but then again so did the band Little Feat, but was highly respected by fans of the music and fellow musicians.  He always had a deep groove and held it down on all the great Little Feat tunes.  I would encourage you to dive deep into his playing; you’ll be a better drummer for it.  I collected a few videos that highlight his drumming and one that serves as a tribute by several drummers that made a video in memory of Richie Hayward.  I hope you enjoy the videos as much as I did!

The first video features a Little Feat performance of one of their hit songs, “Dixie Chicken.”  I have a feeling you might recognize a few of the faces on stage with Little Feat too.  Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3z-GwdaKrn8&feature=related.

The second video features another performance from the band; this time with their song, “Spanish Moon.”  Check out the great jam at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVJf6LhPB7Q&feature=related.

The last video I came across was more of a tribute to Richie Hayward and features several notable drummers playing a second line beat for Richie.  I dug it and I think you will too.  Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YNhkHZgHK8.

Richie Hayward will always be remembered by fellow drummers, musicians and fans for his deep groove and positive attitude about music.  One of the things I love about Richie was he always had a big smile on his face when he was playing the drums; he was totally in his element.  I hope you enjoyed these videos and stay tuned for more!

Thanks,

Chris
