When you’re the only guy called to fill the drum position for the band, Toto, after Jeff Porcaro unfortunately passed away, that’s really saying something. Simon Phillips was hand picked by guitarist and Toto front man, Steve Lukather, to be the drummer for the band. Phillips has also played with other popular musicians including Pete Townsend, Judas Priest, and Jeff Beck just to name a few. I pulled together a few videos that feature Simon Phillips on the drums; showcasing his talent, creativity and experience. I hope you enjoy the videos as much as I did and even learn a thing or two.
The first video features a classic drum battle with Simon Phillips and the great Louie Bellson. Both drummers are great on their own, but it’s always fun to see a good-nature drum battle between two of the greats. Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuYj7KjyJg0&feature=related.
The next video comes from a drum clinic that Simon Phillips played; answering a great question about being a professional drummer, “What do you need to be a pro drummer?” Here he talks about hard work and talent as a drummer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDRf7Of6e2Q&feature=relmfu.
The last video I found for you features one of Simon Phillips’ creative drum solos. He has a very musical and technically precise approach to drumming, which can be seen and heard in this video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81Jr4kcZHIk&feature=related.
Simon Phillips knows a lot about drumming and we should be feel lucky that he is willing to share his experiences with us. I hope you enjoyed these videos and learned a thing or two from them.
Thanks,
Chris
