In the early days of rock and roll music, drummers had a big part to play since they were defining the back beats that would take the drumming community by storm for generations to come. One man that was responsible for creating such an iconic drum beat was Earl Palmer. Palmer was an active session player for a lot of years and played on some of the biggest hit songs in music history from Little Richard, Fats Domino and a long list of other musicians that would all create their own mark on the history of rock and roll music. I found a few videos featuring Earl Palmer behind the kit and explain a little bit of his history in the music business that I think you’ll really enjoy. Check them out below!
Little Richard produced some of the greatest early rock and roll songs out there, including the famous “Lucille.” And who was drumming for him but Earl Palmer. See them live in performance at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7OfUCFSHLI.
Mitch Woods, a great pianist in his own right, produced a short biography about Earl Palmer and his popularity as a session musician. Enjoy the footage here at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-CHEnpplTw.
Lastly, I was able to find the live session from that bio featuring Earl on the drums and some of the other alumni from the Fats Domino here at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK7KxmUbqkE.
I hope you enjoyed hearing from the great Earl Palmer. He should be recognized as one of the most popular session drummers in rock and roll music history. Without drummers like Earl, we wouldn’t have known how popular the “money beat” could have been. There’s more coming your way at Play Drums By Ear, so stay tuned.
Thanks,
Chris
