As the drummer for one of the best funk horn groups in the world, Tower of Power, David Garibaldi is well versed in playing funk beats. But the way is approaches his funk beats if unlike most of the rest. David chooses to incorporate quite a bit of Afro-Cuban drumming into his funk grooves. This mash up fits with tight presentation of Tower of Power and allows David the opportunities to explore a whole new world of possible drum beats. I collected a few videos that highlight David’s playing and even some lessons he has provided to explain some of his approach to building and playing beats around the kit. I really enjoyed taking a closer look at the drumming style of the drummer of one of my absolute favorite bands, and I hope you will too!

Let’s start off by getting to know David Garibaldi a little bit. I found this great interview, featuring some solid drumming, at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2Dktb8fr8c.

Next, David talks about infusing Afro-Cuban drumming into his funk beats. You can really see him work both styles around the kit in this video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG6qe-j0USI.

You can’t talk about a drummer without hearing some of his solo chops. Check out this groove at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Us7yp6RqBaM.

I hope you enjoyed hearing from one of the greatest funk drummers around, David Garibaldi. There’s more coming your way at Play Drums By Ear so stay tuned.

Thanks,

Chris
