Unfortunately, we recently lost a musician that had a very positive impact on popular music over the last few decades.  Drummer and singer, Levon Helm, was one of the original members of The Band, a successful group of musicians that had a major impact on the roots rock music world.  Helm was loved by fans and musicians all around the world and his music will live on in the minds of them all.  I put together a few videos that celebrate the life and music of Levon Helm that I’m sure you will enjoy.

The first video I found comes from the very successful live show that was recorded for the DVD called, The Last Waltz.  The performance features one of The Band’s most successful hit songs, “The Weight,” with Levon Helm on drums and vocals.  Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaQDFk0fDTk&feature=related.

Another hit song from The Band is a song called, “Up On Cripple Creek.”  This next video features some explanation of the making of the song and some praise for Levon Helm on drums and vocals.  Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLCmxMrgfDA&feature=related.

Katie Couric, from CBS News, features an interview with Levon Helm later in his life about his bout with cancer.  This video is a wonderful interview with Levon Helm and can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cnAfSsk2wc&feature=fvst.

Levon Helm fought his battle with throat cancer for ten years and even recovered enough to perform live on stage in the last few years.  See and hear him perform another classic song from The Band, “Ophelia,” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcgxuGiI7wU.

Levon Helm was an American music treasure that not only made a large contribution to The Band, but all music in general.  I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into the life of the great man and musician, Levon Helm.  Stay tuned for more!

Thanks,

Chris

Levon is a great example of that simple but accurate “pocket” playing that

is as impressive in it’s own way as more flamboyant players.
