A Simple Reggae Drums Lesson

Reggae drum beats involve a lot of improvisation on the Hi Hat cymbals.

Playing an effective reggae drum beat on the drums takes coordination and a whole lot of feel.  Most traditional reggae drum beats contradict the straight ahead rock beats that most of you are probably used to playing by now.  I found a video that offers a great explanation of one of the most popular reggae drum beats, the One Drop.  This video will give you the information you need to start playing reggae drums.  I hope you enjoy it!

The reggae drums video lesson comes from Stu Roberts.  Roberts has a series of drum lessons available to all of us.  Check out his reggae lesson at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18zrqYyLI_w&feature=related.

Stu Roberts does a great job of explaining a simple reggae drum beat, and as you can see in his improvisation at the end, there is plenty more you can do beyond the basic beat.  I hope you enjoyed this post and learned from it, because I enjoyed making it for you.

Thanks!

Chris

I find some of these tips extremely useful as I am trying to teach a young girl drummer.
Getting her to keep time is very difficul….there must be a way other than mentronome and CDs…but I ain’t found it yet !

  3. Hey John… teaching time is often an elusive thing. I find that sometimes it helps, especially with younger students to get away from the drum set. Try letting her listen to the click and just clap on various beats. Start with all 4 quarter notes, then try 1 and 3, 2 and 4, etc. let me know if this helps. Good luck, talk to you soon.
