Modern Jazz Drumming With Bill Stewart

Bill Stewart is one of the more popular modern jazz drummers in the industry.

One of the more popular current jazz drummers is Bill Stewart. Bill has quite an extensive list of appearances in the jazz and funk world including Jim Hall, John Scofield, Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein, and even Maceo Parker and James Brown. Bill is often referred to as a melodic drummer, focusing more one grace and rhythmic articulation behind the kit versus technical mastery, not to say he is not a strong technical player. When it comes to jazz drummers, I consider Bill to be a very tasty player that keeps his playing very interesting for listeners. But enough about what I think, I put this post together for you. I shared a couple of videos below featuring bill Stewart in a couple of small jazz groups. Both video featuring some very impressive playing and one also includes a short interview with a few nuggets of information for all aspiring drummers. I hope you enjoy it all as much as I did!

Bill Stewart performed with a small jazz group for the Modern Drum Festival in 2008. Check out this performance and interview at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYdi13sYi-c.

One of the longest lasting groups Bill has been a part of has been a trio with Larry Goldings on organ and Peter Bernstein on guitar. Enjoy this trio performance and awesome drum solo at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkZylsxW_3o.

I hope you enjoyed hearing from the great jazz drummer Bill Stewart. He shared some quality insight for all aspiring drummers and his style is one that a lot of contemporary jazz drummers look up to. There’s more coming your way at Play Drums By Ear so stay tuned.

Thanks,

Chris
