One of the drummers I’ve come across recently has been Stanton Moore. I’ve seen his videos online quite a bit where he talks about New Orleans playing and other unique styles, plus how he brings them into pop beats for his group, Galactic and other bands. Stanton has a great way of explaining grooves and can easily talk with experience as he has definitely done his homework when it comes to drumming. I’ve been enjoying his drumming styles, his taste in music, and some of the lessons he’s offered too. So much in fact that I wanted to share a few of them with you today. I found a track from the group Galactic, a demonstration of how he incorporates the tambourine into his drum set, and a performance with his jazz fusion trio. All are very enjoyable and have a solid groove.

Stanton Moore has made most of his fame as the drummer for the band, Galactic. The group brings jazz and fusion elements into a pop setting, so they can play in front of sold out crowds and get the people dancing because the groove is addicting. Check out the show at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ueiW9MReto.

Next, since Stanton comes out of the Louisiana style of drumming, he incorporates that into his beats. Check out a few of the different ways he uses a tambourine in his playing and see if you can get some inspiration from it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-A7agR6y4w.

Lastly, Stanton started his own trio to play some more of the jazz fusion styles. Enjoy this live show on KEXP in Seattle at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKK7ezn2tig.

I hope you dug watching Stanton Moore do his thing. He’s a great drummer that holds down a solid groove and enjoys teaching others some of his tricks. There’s more coming your way at Play Drums By Ear, so stay tuned.

Thanks,

Chris
