I just saw this killer video on YouTube from a band called Black Country Communion. BCC consists of an all star lineup of musicians including Joe Bonamassa (guitar/vocals), Glenn Hughes (bass guitar), Jason Bonham (drums), and Derek Sherinian (keys). The band has an AWESOME rock sound and a lot of that is thanks to the heavy drumming of Jason Bonham. If you’ve been a drummer for any period of time, you probably recognize the last name of Bonham. Jason is the son of legendary rock drummer John Bonham, who rose to stardom as the drummer for Led Zeppelin. Just like his dad, Jason is a killer drum and lays down an extremely solid groove and foundation.

But back to the video…

BCC covered one of Bonamassa’s tunes called “Ballad of John Henry” at a live show last year. Usually the song has more of a blues roots kind of vibe to it, but in typical BCC fashion, they rocked it hard at this show. And when the intro to the video kicked in, I noticed Jason triggered a drum loop at the beginning. And wouldn’t you know it… it was a drum loop featuring the beat his dad played on the classic Led Zeppelin song “When the Levee Breaks” (a classic rock drum beat that EVERY drummer should learn…)

So for the whole song, Jason was playing his own beat along to one of the most famous drum beats in existence… recorded by his dad John Bonham.

I thought this was stinking cool and definitely worth the share.

Here’s the video from the live show… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDInBPEVMYY.

There’s more cool stuff coming your way at Play Drums By Ear… so keep an eye on your e-mail.

Later gator,
